Professor Atalay Alem

Professor Alem is a psychiatrist and internationally recognized mental health researcher who led large population based mental health surveys and longitudinal studies in Ethiopia. His work has made great contribution to scientific knowledge regarding mental health epidemiology in general and, course and outcome of severe mental disorders in low-income countries in particular. Findings of his study have also contributed in the development of evidence based mental health strategy by the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia. Prof. Alem has trained many psychiatrists and mental health researchers in Ethiopia. He is currently Professor Emeritus and Co-Director of WHO Collaborating Centre in Mental Health Research & Capacity Strengthening, Department of Psychiatry, Addis Ababa University.
